The Divisions of CEC are organizational units within CEC that address many facets of special education. Divisions provide a platform for the membership to divide into special interest groups to discuss current research, exchange ideas, and pursue political action helpful to those with disabilities. Divisions provide journals, newsletters, conferences, workshops and other forms of professional development to their membership. Most importantly they have a political action group that advocates for improved services to persons with disabilities, their families and their educators.
Subdivisions are the state equivalent of the national division. Members choose to be a member of divisions, pay a small membership fee and are automatically added to the state subdivision rosters. In AR-CEC are many opportunities to meet with other who have similar interests. Please explore below.
DEC held a training in Little Rock at the Cooperative Extension Office on February 7, 2008 from 9:30-4:00. Approximately 160 people registered and 150 attended the session with Rene' Crow, ABD. Rene' is a member of the ECSE faculty at the University of Central Arkansas. The session was a good fundraiser for the DEC Division and promoted DAP using Interactive Social Picture Story Board. Each participant benefited from the background information and making an Interactive Social Picture Story Board, "Playing Fair" to take back to their respective settings.

Professor of Special Education Receives National Award
Barbara
Gartin, University of Arkansas professor of special education, recently
received the Burton Blatt Humanitarian Award from the Council for Exceptional
Children’s Division on Developmental Disabilities. The award is named for
Dr. Burton Blatt (1927-1985), a pioneer in humanizing services for people
with mental retardation.
Gartin was presented with the award earlier this month in Seattle, honoring
her exceptional efforts in furthering the cause of people with cognitive
disabilities, mental retardation, autism and related disabilities. Gartin
has co-authored three books: one on special education law, one concerning
differentiation of instruction, and one about developing professional and
family partnerships. Her record of service to the profession includes serving
as president of the Education Division of American Association on Mental
Retardation, president of the Division on Developmental Disabilities in
the Council for Exceptional Children, and state president of both the Arkansas
Council for Exceptional Children and the Arkansas Division on Developmental
Disabilities. Her leadership in the field of disabilities includes her advocacy
on behalf of individuals with disabilities over a period of 35 years and
her work providing training and support to both in-service and pre-service
teachers of children and youth with disabilities. Dr. Gartin stated that
“My goal is to provide a better tomorrow for persons with disabilities,
through education and advocacy. I believe that this is the path toward an
equal and just society.”
